This course covers the safe use of Public Access Defibrillators or PADs. This course will train you in the safe use of PADs that are increasingly available in the UK. This course also covers CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and Basic Life Support.
Defibrillators in the UK
It is established that defibrillators are the most effective method of attempting to get a heart beating again. Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) are placed where they can be easily accessed – such as libraries, Sports Halls, Theme Parks and Airports and in theory anyone can use one without any training in order to ‘shock’ a heart. These Public defibrillators are of a type called ‘Automated External Defibrillators’ which esentially means that they make the decision whether or not to shock.
In practice, there is a great reluctance to use a device without training as there is a fear of ‘making things worse’. This 4 hour course teaches members of the public Basic Life Support, how a defibrillator works and how to use an AED and takes away the fear of using one.
Defibrillators are always used in conjunction with Basic Life Support so this course covers both aspects.
The training course will consist of:
Our trainers come from a range of professional backgrounds such as the emergency services, the military and outdoor professionals as well as experienced First Responders and First Aiders.
Our training is very practical and hands on with a typically 70% practical to just 30% theory. Our courses do not rely upon the usual ‘death by PowerPoint’, instead we use progressive incident scenario based training methods. Our courses teach techniques proven to work in real life incidents and not just in a classroom. Our training builds confidence and develops first aid skills into complete incident management. Read more about our training and why we get such positive reviews.
All candidates must attend the full course to qualify. Each candidate is continually assessed throughout.
The ITC Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator Qualification is valid for 3 years.
It can be revalidated by completing rhe same course again.
Our main awarding body for this course is ITC First Aid who are authorised and regulated by Ofqual and the SQA.
